How to Hang a Hammock?

I get asked all the time: "How high should I put my straps?" and "How far apart should the trees be?" Here is a way to think about how to hang your hammock.

The Distance: You want your trees (or posts) to be about 12 to 15 feet apart.

If the posts are too close, your hammock will create a "U" shape and you will feel squeezed. If they are too far, you'll need extra-long straps to reach, and the tension may be too much.

The Height: A good rule of thumb is to wrap your straps around the tree at about 6 feet up. When you sit in the hammock, the lowest part of the seat should be about 18 inches off the ground. This makes it easy to sit down and stand up.

The Angle: In the diagram below, you’ll see the straps come off the tree at a 30-degree angle. This is the "sweet spot." It keeps the hammock flat enough for a comfortable rest without putting too much stress on the gear.

Safety Tip:  Always check the trees, before you get in your hammock. Make sure they are sturdy, alive, and at least 6 inches thick. Never hang from a dead branch! Additionally, check the straps, rope, or chains to ensure they are strong enough to support the weight and are in good working condition.

Closing: That’s it! Once you do it a couple of times, it becomes second nature. Hammocks are portable so they are a fun way to nap where ever you go.

Spring Adventures Start Here: Handmade Hammocks for the Season

Spring in Texas: The Perfect Season for Handmade Hammocks

Spring is one of our favorite times of year at Las Hammocks. In Texas, the temperatures settle into the comfortable 70s, flowers begin to bloom, and the trees fill with fresh green leaves. It’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy nature again.

It also means the start of pop-up market season for us. Each spring we return to Galveston Island, where we love meeting customers visiting from all over the country. These markets allow us to share our handmade hammocks and beach bags in person and help people find the perfect hammock for relaxing outdoors. We are always grateful to meet the people who support our small business and make this journey possible.

Supporting Artisan Craftsmanship in El Salvador

We recently returned from El Salvador, where we spent time with the talented artisans who handcraft our hammocks and textiles. Visiting our partners is always a powerful reminder of the dedication, skill, and tradition behind every piece we sell.

Seeing the weaving process firsthand reminds us why we started Las Hammocks: to support artisan families while bringing high-quality, handmade hammocks to people who appreciate craftsmanship and sustainability.

Making Time for What Matters Most

February is a time to slow down, relax, and spend time with the people we love. But it’s also easy to get stuck in routines, work, schedules, responsibilities, and the everyday rush of life.

One thing we’ve learned is how important it is to intentionally do new things together and experience life side by side. That might be with a partner, a friend, or family. It doesn’t have to be something big. Sometimes it’s as simple as stepping outside, taking a walk, watching a sunset, or trying somewhere new.

Slowing down doesn’t always happen naturally. We have to choose it. We have to make the intention to pause, to be present, and to create space for connection.

For some of us, February means colder days and more time indoors. For others, the weather is beautiful and time to get outside, breathe fresh air, and explore nature. Wherever you are, this season is a reminder to reset, reconnect, and make time for moments that matter.

Some of our favorite memories come from simply being together in places that help us slow down, like evenings in El Salvador surrounded by nature and watching the sun set. Moments like these are what inspired Las Hammocks in the first place. Not just a product, but a way of living. A reminder to rest, to be outside, and to enjoy life with the people around you.

A hammock has always symbolized pause. A place to sit, breathe, talk, laugh, and just be. Whether it’s in your backyard, on a porch, at the beach, or while traveling somewhere new, it creates a space where time feels slower and connection feels easier.

Because relaxation isn’t just about rest.
It’s about connection.
It’s about intention.
It’s about choosing to experience life together.

This February, wherever you are, we hope you take a moment to step outside your routine. Try something new. Watch a sunset. Spend time with someone you love. And give yourself permission to slow down, even for a little while.

Hammocks: A History of Rest

Did you know July 22 is National Hammock Day?

Every year, this date honors the ultimate symbol of rest and relaxation, the hammock.

At Las Hammocks, we believe every day is a good day to celebrate slowing down, but Hammock Day is a special reminder of where it all began. Hammocks trace their roots back to the ancient Mayan civilizations of Central and South America, where they were originally crafted for sleeping and resting. Traditionally made from the bark of the Hamack Tree, these handwoven slings or hamacas were suspended between trees to keep people cool, safe, and comfortable.

Over time, the hammock evolved from a practical necessity into a beloved symbol of leisure, summer vibes, and peaceful living. Whether you hang one up in your backyard, take it to the beach, or pack it for a camping trip, a hammock invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply be.

So even if you missed the official date, it’s never too late to celebrate what the hammock stands for: comfort, calm, and a moment to yourself.

From all of us at Las Hammocks

The Story Behind Las Hammocks: Supporting Artisans in El Salvador

It all begins with an idea.

At Las Hammocks, every product tells a story — a story of craftsmanship, culture, and community. Founded by Fabricio and his wife, Marianne, our small family business is passionate about bringing you beautiful, high-quality hammocks, beach bags, and textiles handmade by skilled artisans in El Salvador.

Why El Salvador?
El Salvador is known for its rich tradition of weaving and artisanal crafts, passed down through generations. Fabricio was originally born there, making our connection to the country deeply personal. The artisans we work with create each piece using techniques honed over decades, combining vibrant colors, durable materials, and intricate patterns that reflect their heritage.

More Than Just Hammocks
While we’re known for our handwoven cotton and nylon hammocks, we also offer a growing collection of artisan-made goods including bold, colorful beach bags and beautiful textiles like tablecloths. Each item is made with care and carries the heart of the culture it comes from.

Sustainability Matters
We care about the planet as much as we care about people. Our beach bags are made from recycled plastics, giving waste materials a second life in something both stylish and functional. It’s one of the many ways we’re committed to sustainable and ethical production.

A Family Business with Heart
As a Houston-based family business, Fabricio and Marianne oversee every step of the process, from sourcing to shipping. Their mission is to share the beauty and skill of El Salvadoran artisans with customers across the US and beyond, one handcrafted item at a time.

Join Our Community
We invite you to explore our collection of hammocks, beach bags, and textiles. They’re perfect for relaxing at home, lounging at the beach, or adding a touch of handmade charm to your space.
