How to Hang a Hammock?
I get asked all the time: "How high should I put my straps?" and "How far apart should the trees be?" Here is a way to think about how to hang your hammock.
The Distance: You want your trees (or posts) to be about 12 to 15 feet apart.
If the posts are too close, your hammock will create a "U" shape and you will feel squeezed. If they are too far, you'll need extra-long straps to reach, and the tension may be too much.
The Height: A good rule of thumb is to wrap your straps around the tree at about 6 feet up. When you sit in the hammock, the lowest part of the seat should be about 18 inches off the ground. This makes it easy to sit down and stand up.
The Angle: In the diagram below, you’ll see the straps come off the tree at a 30-degree angle. This is the "sweet spot." It keeps the hammock flat enough for a comfortable rest without putting too much stress on the gear.
Safety Tip: Always check the trees, before you get in your hammock. Make sure they are sturdy, alive, and at least 6 inches thick. Never hang from a dead branch! Additionally, check the straps, rope, or chains to ensure they are strong enough to support the weight and are in good working condition.
Closing: That’s it! Once you do it a couple of times, it becomes second nature. Hammocks are portable so they are a fun way to nap where ever you go.
